Thursday: Pick One Weekend Plan Before Friday

A Thursday move for working fathers: choose one small weekend plan with your kids tonight, put a time on it, and say it out loud so Saturday doesn't fill up without you.

By Friday night the weekend is usually already spoken for: errands, catch-up work, the yard, whatever the week pushed back. The time with your kids ends up being whatever is left over. Today’s 1.1% is deciding one small plan now, while there is still room to protect it.

The 1.1% for today

1. Check yesterday’s fix (30 seconds). If you fixed a snag on Wednesday, notice whether it stayed fixed today. Cross it off or make the fix smaller. Then move on.

2. Pick one small plan (3 minutes). Choose one thing you can do with your kids this weekend that costs little or nothing and fits in an hour or two: a walk, a game, cooking one meal together, fixing something side by side. Small is the point. A plan you can actually keep beats a big one that gets cancelled.

3. Give it a time and say it out loud (2 minutes). Put a day and a time on it and write it where you will see it Saturday morning. Then tell your kids tonight. Once they know, the plan is much harder for the rest of the weekend to crowd out.

Why it works

Weekends fill up from the front. Whatever gets named first tends to get done, and whatever stays vague gets pushed by things that feel more urgent. Naming one plan on Thursday puts it ahead of the errands instead of behind them. Saying it out loud adds a small promise, and keeping small promises is one of the ways kids learn they can count on you.
